November 2017 (Volume 68, Issue 2)

On Thursday, November 10th, the Spanish club and the Dance team came together to organize a Zumbathon in an effort to help victims of the Puerto Rico hurricanes. Leading the event was Ms.McSherry, a spanish teacher at the high school and Zumba Instructor. She shared that “multiple students reached out concerned about Puerto Rico, so [she] decided to combine [her] interest and the cause to create a fun way to get involved in efforts in Puerto Rico”. The Zumbathon lasted from 3-8pm, in the Cafeteria. When I arrived, Dance team members Lily Esteghamati and Maddie Alford were leading participants in a dance that they choreographed specifically for the event. By the end of the night, the Zumba dancers raised about $700. The money will be going to Vamonos tours, a company that has been used twice at the high school and once at Pollard Middle school to take trips in varying Spanish speaking countries. They will add the money to the total $16,551 they have raised and use it to fix damage to shelters, nursing homes, schools, and local communities that were destroyed in the storm. If you would still like to donate, you can visit the GoFundMe page for “Vamonos Tours” and do your part in rebuilding the broken communities across Puerto Rico.
